Dr. George Chamberlain

President, Global Aquaculture Alliance; Founder of iAqua

After completing his master’s degree in aquaculture studies at Texas A&M University, George Chamberlain continued as a researcher and extension aquaculture specialist while earning his Ph.D. In 1990, he joined Ralston Purina Company, where he directed the aquaculture program in the Americas, Europe and Asia. In 1998, he moved to Monsanto to develop a program for genetic selection, soy-based feeds and sustainable pond systems for marine shrimp. Chamberlain was elected to the board of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) in 1990. In 1996, he served as president and convened the first WAS meeting in Asia at a time when issues of sustainability began to threaten the future of aquaculture. In 1997, Chamberlain assisted in founding the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), a science-based non-profit organization, dedicated to the sustainability of aquaculture, and he has served as president since its inception. In 1999, Chamberlain led the development of an integrated shrimp farm in Malaysia and in 2004, established iAqua, a technology company that operates breeding, nutrition and production facilities for black tiger shrimp in Brunei and for Pacific white shrimp in Hawaii. iAqua is best known for its SPF Kona Bay broodstock, feed protein concentrates to replace fishmeal, hatchery and farm management services, and sashimi grade “Kauai Shrimp.”
