Dan Glickman

Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture

Dan Glickman is the former U.S. secretary of agriculture under President Clinton; a former congressman (D-KS) of 18 years; and the former chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). He is the chairman of the U.S. Global Coalition, which examines global economic policy, and on the board of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He is the executive director of the Aspen Institute and also co-chair of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Commission on Political Reform, whose recent report received extensive press coverage and was a major theme of the Aspen Ideas Festival. Glickman is an expert in food security and can explain how food and food supply are at the center of almost every geopolitical relationship. Under his leadership as secretary of agriculture, the department administered farm and conservation programs, modernized food safety regulations, forged international trade agreements to expand U.S. markets and improved its commitment to fairness and equality in civil rights. While a congressman, he served on the House Agriculture Committee, including six years as a chairman of the subcommittee with jurisdiction over farm policy issues. He currently co-chairs an initiative to look at the long-term implications of food and agricultural policy and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ global agricultural development initiative. He chairs an initiative at the Institute of Medicine aimed at childhood obesity. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a senior fellow of the Center on Communication Leadership and Policy. He is the author of “Farm Futures.”
