Crop Science: Growing the Revolution

The world needs a second Green Revolution. Is sufficient food production possible by harnessing the power of microbes, or with the power of analytics and big data? Could soil microbes be key to the next antibiotic or vaccine? Have we robbed our crops of nutrition while seeking to protect them from pests and diseases? Can a crop of the past, like hemp, bring us a new sustainable industry? The Alltech REBELation brought together researchers, farmers, entrepreneurs and consumers to engage in an open discussion about this growing revolution.

Powell illustrates for audiences precisely what it takes to be a leader, providing strategies for “taking charge” during times of great change and crisis: how to remain focused, take responsibility and work toward improving processes, organizations and people.

General Colin Powell - Former United States Secretary of State

The True Cost of Food Waste. Roughly one-third of all the food produced is wasted, amounting to about $1 trillion worth of food loss a year. At the same time, nearly a billion people around the world don’t have food to eat. What can we do to make a difference? Reducing food waste will pay off.

Dan Glickman

Market Outlook: 2015 and Beyond. Opening the market. Are we letting politics get in the way? Australia can export, but America can’t. Ireland wants to export, but America can’t. What’s wrong? How can we rebel against it?

Aidan Connolly - Alltech

It’s Your Ship. At age 36, Mike Abrashoff became the youngest commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet of the U.S. Navy. Hear his “Leadership Roadmap” that reduced personnel turnover to 1 percent, tripled the rate of promotions and slashed operating expenses by 25 percent. His leadership book “It’s Your Ship” is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Creating Agri-preneurs.  Do you use drones?  Do you understand drones?  Do you understand what can happen when you don’t accept the status quo of change?  In 1989, entrepreneurs represented six percent of ownership in private companies.  Today, that number is only 3.6 percent.  What has happened?  As entrepreneurs, you have been left behind.  This is how we see the future for our generation.  This is how we propose to rebel.

David Hunt - Agrilarity

Comeback Crops: Hemp & Tobacco’s Ebola Connection.  What has the world learned from Ebola?  Can we rebel from the Ebola catastrophe?  What is it that crops can do for us?  Could they be the source of a new color by placing Red 40?  Could they be the source of an Ebola vaccine, or indeed personalized cancer medicines?  Let’s rebel.  Let’s use the assets we have.  Let’s use our imagination.  As Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Here's what you missed:

Microbes at Work: Nature’s Original Internet.  Microbes, microbes, microbes.  They are rebelling against us.  There are literally millions in a gram of soil.  We go out of our way to destroy them with fungicides and pesticides, and yet, they survive.  What can we learn?  How can we embrace them, and help them?  How can we use microbes to overcome the greening, the citrus greening, which is destroying the oranges in Florida, and may ultimately close it down?  How can we use them to avoid the unbelievable use of pesticides in the banana-producing areas of the world?  The microbes are there.  With a little loving care and attention, they will work for you.

Dr. Steven Borst

Feeding for Profit.  Follow the signals.  Rebel against inorganic.  Adopt nature’s way of feeding a plant.  Why are plants becoming deficient in minerals?  Why is it that our soils are becoming polluted with minerals?  What have we done wrong?  How can we rebel against this?

Steve Elliott

Brazil’s Big Opportunities.  Are we rebelling against the removal of the rainforest, or are we embracing change?  Brazil is the bread basket of the world, or is it the head case of the world?  Let’s rebel against the status quo.  Let’s see what the melon producers are doing.  Let’s see what the soya producers are doing.  Let’s embrace our opportunities.  Let’s look at nature.

Roberto Bosco - Alltech Crop Science,

In High Spirits.  I am an ethanol producer.  I produce 100 million gallons of ethanol per year.  Yet, I am using corn which, perhaps, should be going for food.  I am in the business of maximizing yield of foods, and of ethanol per acre.  How I see Crop Science, and the whole cycle of being energy-independent.  Yet, at the same time, we need to save the heart of our soil, and also the farmer.

Duane Kristensen - Chief Ethanol Fuels, Inc.

The Hutterite Movement. Canada's most successful farmers for the last 400 years. What is their secret?

Ron Friesen - EMF Nutrition

Pay Dirt.  It is in the dirt.  It is in the earth.  It is in soil.  It is literally millions of bacteria waiting to rebel; to rebel against pesticides, and fungicides.  Let’s help them.  Let’s create a new homerun.  Let’s give pay dirt an opportunity of a lifetime, but only in the lifetime of those bacteria that we seem to be going out of our way to destroy.  Let’s rebel against it.
